Boris Herrmann, skipper of Team Malizia, deployed a weather buoy northwest of Cabo Verde this afternoon while racing in the Vendée Globe. The scientific instrument will drift with the Ocean currents and measure data crucial for weather forecasting predictions and climate change monitoring. Boris Herrmann and his team have continuously carried scientific equipment onboard their IMOCA racing yacht since 2018, and are one of the top contributors of Ocean data in this year’s Global Carbon Budget, one of the key publications in climate science.

 - While competing at the highest level in the toughest offshore races, 

 have a mission to further scientific research, raise awareness for Ocean protection, and inspire ambitious climate action. This was particularly evident today as the 

 skipper was sailing on Day 8 of the iconic 

. As he was racing against his 39 competitors northwest of Cabo Verde, Boris Herrmann deployed one of the eight 

 in the race, just south of 21°N this Tuesday afternoon at 14:00 UTC.

“With our team, we have deployed several weather buoys and other instruments like Argo floats numerous times in the last years, including the previous Vendée Globe, The Ocean Race, the Transat Jacques Vabre 2023, and The Transat CIC this spring” says the 

. “These buoys are very important for meteorology but also for climatology.”

 adds: “Hopefully today we are once again making a useful contribution to science and better understanding climate change, as well as improving weather and climate models!” Just after signing “There’s no planet B”, “Malizia”, “Climate Action Now!”, and his name, Boris Herrmann deployed the buoy: “Ok, let’s get this overboard! Cheers, bye bye, bring us good measurements!” Facing the camera, he concluded: “Science mission accomplished!”

The drifter buoys float with the Ocean currents, and record temperature, surface currents, and atmospheric pressure data. 

 explains: “Atmospheric pressure can’t be measured by satellites and drifter buoys are among the few tools available to obtain this information. This is why deploying them is crucial for accurate weather forecasting and climate change monitoring.” 

About 1,300 drifter buoys are currently deployed worldwide, with approximately 230 buoys in the North Atlantic where the IMOCA fleet is racing in the first week of the Vendée Globe 2024-2025. Several hundred new buoys need to be deployed each year to meet up the requirements of the WMO and ensure a minimum level of quality in weather forecasting. This drifter buoy deployment in this race is coordinated through UNESCO, the Vendée Globe, the IMOCA class, Météo France, and OceanOPS.

 adds: “The data collected by the drifter buoys also improves vessel routing, helping to reduce environmental impacts. Boris was one of the pioneers among IMOCA skippers to deploy these buoys. In the Vendée Globe 2020-2021, he was one of only three sailors to do so. We are pleased that he has continued to do so over the years. It is great to see that more and more sailors are now doing the same.”

Alongside Boris Herrmann, who has also been running the 

 since 2018, four other skippers will deploy weather buoys in an area with scarce observations between the Canary Islands and Cabo Verde. Two other skippers will deploy a different type of weather buoy near Cape of Good Hope and near Madagascar. In total, a record-number of 25 skippers are carrying scientific devices in this 10th edition of the race: OceanPack, Argo float, drifter buoy, planktoscope, weather station…

Raising awareness for Ocean and climate protection through the adventure of sailing is printed in Team Malizia’s DNA and their 

, which is supported by their seven main partners. "Like in every race, delivery or training we do, I also have the OceanPack onboard”, explains the 

. “This automated laboratory very precisely measures Ocean CO₂ concentrations, temperature and salinity data. By now, we’ve gathered one of the largest accessible datasets, which is freely available for scientists to use to better understand the role of the Ocean in the climate system.”

Earlier this year, the importance of even a single measurement campaign by

Team Malizia’s skipper Boris Herrmann has started his second Vendée Globe this Sunday at 13:02 in Les Sables d’Olonne. After sailing up the famous channel to the cheers of an enthusiastic crowd, the fleet of 40 IMOCA boats set sail in very light winds and in a race that will take them around the world and through the challenging conditions of the Southern Ocean.

The German solo sailor kicked-off the round-the-world race at the pin end of the line, with a little more air, and impeccably controlled timing this Sunday 10 November 2024 at 13:02 (local time, 12:02 pm UTC). Going quicker than his other 39 competitors, he rapidly gained more than 200 metres over them and 

 for the first twenty minutes of the race. 

, the Vendée Globe is considered the greatest challenge in sport. The legendary solo, non-stop, unassisted, round-the-world race is celebrating its 10th edition with a record-number of 40 IMOCA boats on the start line. Only 114 sailors have ever completed the race out of 200 who started, and Boris Herrmann made history in 2021, when he became the 

“I feel great and I’m very keen to go”, said

 as he arrived in the mixed zone this morning. "I slept well, though I woke up an hour too early from my alarm. Then I cuddled with my dog Lilli for a bit, and I’m glad she can still accompany me on the dock as I walk to the boat in a few minutes. I’m looking forward to seeing the team before I dock off and to being on board. We were just waiting in the crew area with a few other skippers and I enjoyed being around them in these last moments before we race around the world."

With a blend of experience, nautical miles sailed, and an IMOCA boat designed specifically for the Vendée Globe 2024-2025, the German is regarded by press and competitors as 

 in this year’s race. Since his remarkable fifth-place finish in the last edition, his win of the Southern Ocean Leg in The Ocean Race last year, and his back-to-back second-place finishes in the two transats this spring, his potential to secure a podium spot or even win the race has been widely highlighted. However, Boris remains humble and doesn’t let the pressure get to him, as he repeatedly emphasises the incredible level in the fleet, where, in his opinion 6 to 10 skippers are capable of winning or placing on the podium. “A success would be to do a good race for myself, in terms of taking the potential of the boat as well as my own, and have a good time as well. And then we will see the result.”

After a last embrace with his wife Birte and goodbyes with his team, friends, and partners, Boris Herrmann had a final chat with 

. The Monegasque Sovereign had come to the dock to wish the 

skipper fair winds and watch him dock-off. “This scientific and environmental aspect is important to protect the oceans. Boris and the other sailors involved are ambassadors and players in this formidable effort,” enthused HSH Prince Albert II, who came to Les Sables-d’Olonne on Friday to sign a partnership agreement with the Vendée Globe Foundation of which he is Honorary President. Boris Herrmann will also deploy a drifter buoy, as he has done multiple times over the past years, in order to help improve weather forecasting and climate change monitoring.

 lined up along the famous harbour exit. “This is incredible, last time was during the pandemic, this time is so different and the support from the cheering crowds is unbelievable”, said 

He reflected: “As a team, we want to consistently continue the work we started. Sport has a wonderful power, it keeps evoking and reminding us of positive emotions. It brings people together across nations, borders, and different views. Seeing such a large crowd here and so many international followers tracking this grand adventure online — I really appreciate the value of the race. So, let’s see if we can get off to a good start here and keep up with the fleet."

“However, it looks like we will take longer than the usual seven days to reach the Equator”, said the 

. “So I think the chances of beating the 74-day record set by Armel Le Cléac’h are reduced even if the race speeds up quickly with the front forecast at Cape Finistere with a three-to four metre swell.” The decision for tomorrow might be whether to sail inside or outside the traffic separation zone (TTS) at Cape Finistere. “There, the big challenge will be timing the sail changes correctly and navigating the traffic separation zone, which will be physically demanding. We’ll need to hit the waypoints, and it might even mean going a bit faster. This could lead to a particularly strenuous period in a couple of days."

The real challenge of the Vendée Globe lies in the 

required to complete this race. "Eighty days to sail around the world is a lot”, said Boris Herrmann. “I’ll need to break it down into small stages to avoid feeling overwhelmed. I've prepared well for this. I feel in harmony with the boat, mentally and technically ready."

Off To A Great Start Around The World For Team Malizia’s Boris Herrmann In Vendée Globe 2024-2025

Team Malizia’s skipper Boris Herrmann is setting sail this Sunday in the Vendée Globe, the legendary solo, non-stop, unassisted round-the-word race. Once again, the German is eager to face the demanding challenges of the Southern Ocean. With a blend of experience, nautical miles sailed, and a boat designed specifically for this race, Boris Herrmann is considered a strong podium contender in this edition of the Vendée Globe.

“The Vendée Globe is simply one of the greatest challenges in sport”, says 

 a few days before the start of the race this Sunday 10 November. “Solo, non-stop, unassisted, and a full lap around the world. Despite having done the race before and sailed around the globe with our new 

 remains the ultimate challenge. Since September, my hands get a bit sweaty, I’m jumping from one leg to the other, and I am truly excited about this.”

This Sunday at 13:02 (CET), a record-number of 40 IMOCA boats will set sail in the 10th edition of the race. The course covers 

 (24,300 nautical miles), starting and finishing in Les Sables d’Olonne, France. The fleet will head down the Atlantic, around Antarctica, passing the three iconic Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin, and Cape Horn, before returning north through the Atlantic, aiming to finish between mid and end of January. “Seeing Cape Horn is one of the reasons to do the race", comments the 

. "It’s such a magical moment, to have done the Southern Ocean and then see this iconic landmark. This will be my sixth circumnavigation and my seventh rounding of Cape Horn, but it never gets old. It’s very special and I’m really looking forward to seeing it.”

Held every four years since 1989, the Vendée Globe is also known as the 

. Only 114 sailors have ever completed the race out of 200 who started. Boris Herrmann made history as the 

 to compete in the race, finishing an impressive fifth out of 33 participants in the 2020-2021 edition after more than 80 days at sea. Following this achievement, Team Malizia sold the boat and built the new 

 yacht, launched in July 2022, incorporating Boris Herrmann’s insights from his time in the Southern Ocean.

“We quickly began building a new boat specifically optimised for the Vendée Globe,” says the 

. “We decided that to truly understand and ensure the reliability of the boat, we would sail it around the world in The Ocean Race 2022-2023.” Along with the several transatlantic races over the past 2.5 years, the new boat has already raced nearly three times around the globe in solo, double-handed, and crewed modes. “I believe that’s what sets us apart from many other teams.”

: “We are in a very good position for this race. In terms of the campaign, there’s a solid foundation that gives me confidence it will continue strong. Our team’s future isn’t solely dependent on the outcome of this race. I felt that pressure the last time, but this time, I hope to approach it with a lighter, more carefree attitude and really enjoy the experience, focusing on becoming one with my boat. And it is truly my boat. I conceived it from scratch and was driving most of its details and features from day one.”

 goes on: “We are the team that has sailed the most miles in the first four years of preparation, and especially with the Southern Ocean experiences, I now feel much more in tune with the boat. These experiences have made a huge difference since last time. I think we are one of the best prepared teams. There was just nothing to do for me anymore on the boat since mid-September. This is a great feeling.”

 was designed to be more comfortable and smoother through the waves. “There’s really a trade-off between being fast on flat seas or in waves. We wanted a boat that adapts to the sea state rather than fighting every wave, especially those of the Southern Ocean. That’s been a 

 of our campaign: being able to sail at 30 knots while still feeling comfortable.” A performance already proven in The Ocean Race, with Team Malizia having won the Southern Ocean leg of the race. However, Boris Herrmann remains pragmatic, understanding of the Vendée Globe's risks. With unpredictable conditions and the potential for technical issues, no matter how well-prepared a skipper may be, nothing is guaranteed. "There is a high chance of disappointment—something could break, like a bowsprit in the first week, and suddenly you're already out of the race. But you can still complete the voyage," he reflects.

Beyond pure performance, raising awareness through Team Malizia’s 

is of uttermost importance for Boris Herrmann. As he did in the previous edition, he will collect another round-the-world set of 

 with his onboard laboratory. The measured CO2, temperature, and salinity data is used by scientists worldwide to better understand the role of the Ocean in climate change, and is incredibly valuable as Boris Herrmann races in the most remote areas of the world where almost no research vessels go. He will also deploy a drifter buoy to further support weather forecasting and climate change monitoring

Boris Herrmann’s greatest challenges during the Vendée Globe were battling 

 when he had to climb the 29-metre mast in the middle of the Ocean. In Les Sables d’Olonne, he was spotted testing his slightly improved climbing gear: “I’m still not looking forward to climbing, it’s always a struggle to go up, and if there’s any sea state, it quickly becomes dangerous and very challenging. As a team, we spent a lot of energy on redundant wind gear, which measures wind speed and direction. We now have three units at the top of the mast instead of two, and two at the back of the boat, as well as a set of tools all about avoiding any extra reason to have to climb.”

“As for the loneliness, the first time was really tough”, he comments. “But instead of just saying ‘This is difficult, I’ll stay away from it’, I want to approach this challenge differently. I’m curious to see if I can go through it and still maintain a better state of mind. That’s the real question for this race. And I’m quite confident that I can.”

Team Malizia has focused on improving the boat’s 

, balancing between comfort and weight. New features include a custom cushioned seat in the cockpit, a large navigation seat with adjustable back rest in the aft cabin, and a special bed bunk that tilts with the boat’s angle and is fitted with a custom mattress. “Conditions onboard during offshore races used to be very spartan, but now competitors are also more willing to bring items that make life onboard more comfortable”, explains Boris Herrmann. Besides the ergonomics, the team has added touches to the boat to make his 

 for the next months more cosy. “I’ll bring small gifts from the team, and they’ve also signed the coach roof next to my name, which is priceless when sailing solo in the most remote parts of the world.”

In Les Sables d’Olonne, Boris Herrmann stays discrete and fully focussed on the last moments before the start. “I have a bit of time by myself on the boat every day. I'm really enjoying being at the race village now, but with this many people, it can get tiring very quickly. My family is currently at home in Hamburg, my wife will come on the start day and until then I’m with my little dog Lilli.” Besides various briefings, a press conference yesterday and partner events, he spends his last days before the start exercising and checking the weather with his long-time 

 who is currently in Les Sables d’Olonne with Team Malizia and mentoring under Boris.

“The models are a bit unstable, so it’s difficult to predict but it looks like a light-wind start, unlike last time when we had to deal with a big weather front right away”, details the 

 “It seems that we might take longer than the usual 7 days or so to get to the Equator. So I think there’s a reduced chance of breaking Armel Le Cléac'h’s 74–day race record.”

I will essentially act as a passenger until ten minutes before the start, when I take over from Will who I trust fully to manage the dock-off, setting sails, and preparing the boat with the rest of the shore team onboard. This setup allows me to rest, eat, and check the weather. After our traditional high-five, Will jumps off last, is picked up by the chase boat, and I sail us over the start line.”

Sie gewährt exklusive Einblicke in die Vorbereitungen auf Boris Herrmanns nächste große Herausforderung: die Vendée Globe 2024/2025.

Nach knapp einem Jahr Dreharbeiten und einer Weltpremiere Ende September ist es nun soweit: Pünktlich zum Start der Vendée Globe am 

 ausgestrahlt. Die vom NDR Fernsehen und Beetz Brothers produzierte Dokumentation zeichnet ein sportlich spannendes und zugleich sehr persönliches Porträt des deutschen Extremseglers.

Im Jahr 2020 trat Boris Herrmann als erster Deutscher an der 

, dem härtesten Solo-Segelrennen der Welt, an und beendete es erfolgreich als Fünfter von dreiunddreißig Konkurrenten. 80 Tage allein und nonstop um die Welt, durch die Südmeere, geprägt von Phasen der Erschöpfung und Einsamkeit. Noch an Bord schwor er sich, diese Regatta nie wieder zu segeln. Und doch will er es noch einmal wissen: Am 10. November 2024 wird er um 13.02 Uhr zum zweiten Mal über die Startlinie der Vendée Globe segeln.

Erstmals erlaubte Boris Herrmann einer Filmcrew solch

 in sein Leben, seine Motivation und seine Gefühle. Zum ersten Mal sprechen sein Vater und auch seine Mutter über die Kindheit und die familiären Hintergründe des Seglers. Der Film von Jan Zabeil begleitet Boris Herrmann durch sportliche und persönliche Schlüsselmomente, die Höhen und Tiefen seiner nächsten großen Herausforderung: der Vendée Globe 2024/25.

Neben Boris Herrmann selbst kommen in der Dokumentation auch Mitglieder seines 

zu Wort, darunter seine niederländische Segelpartnerin Rosalin Kuiper und andere sportliche Weggefährten. Birte Lorenzen-Herrmann bietet Einblicke in das Zusammenleben mit einem Extremsportler, den Alltag in verschiedenen Lebensrealitäten und ihren Umgang mit Sorgen um den Ehepartner und Vater des gemeinsamen Kleinkindes. Mit der Überschreitung des Ziels von 2 Millionen Mangroven hat der Malizia Mangrove Park einen weiteren bedeutenden Schritt in diesem Jahr in seinen Bemühungen gemacht, die Mangrovenwälder zu schützen und dem Klimawandel entgegenzuwirken.  wiederherzustellen, freuen wir uns, bekanntzugeben, dass der Malizia Mangrove Park dieses Ziel bereits in diesem Herbst überschritten hat“, sagt 

 auf den Philippinen geschaffen, wo in den letzten 100 Jahren die Hälfte der Mangroven 

abgeholzt worden waren. Dieser neue Pflanz-Erfolg ist ein bedeutender Schritt in unserem Engagement, den Klimawandel zu bekämpfen, die Biodiversität wiederherzustellen und unsere Küstenökosysteme zu schützen.“

Der 2020 gegründete Malizia Mangroven Park leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Wiederherstellung dieses Küstenökosystems, bietet den Einheimischen bessere Einkommensmöglichkeiten und bindet große Mengen an Kohlendioxid. Gemeinsam mit Experten der 

 war das Ziel des Parks, eine Million Mangroven neben den bestehenden zu pflanzen.„Dank weltweiter Spenden haben wir dieses Ziel bereits im März überschritten und uns das ehrgeizige Ziel gesetzt, die nächste Million zu pflanzen – und das haben wir schon erreicht!“, fügt der 

 hinzu. „Dieser schnelle Erfolg in diesem Jahr ist größtenteils durch die Unterstützung unseres 

 ermöglicht worden." Die Wiederherstellung von Mangroven spielt eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Aufnahme von Kohlendioxid, der Förderung der Meeresbiodiversität und dem Schutz von Küstengemeinden vor Erosion und extremen Wetterereignissen. Dank der Beiträge und des festen Engagements von Zurich sowie von allen anderen Partnern, privaten Spendern und Fans hat der Malizia Mangrove Park nicht nur sein Ziel erreicht, sondern auch die Grundlage für zukünftige Wiederaufforstungsmaßnahmen gelegt.

bekannt zu geben.“ Die Idee hinter dem Mangroven-Abo ist es, Menschen eine Möglichkeit zu bieten, einen wirkungsvollen, langfristigen Beitrag zum Umweltschutz zu leisten, indem täglich eine Mangrove für sie gepflanzt wird. Mit diesem Abo werden jährlich 365 Mangroven für 125 Euro pro Jahr gepflanzt. Sofern es nicht gekündigt wurde, verlängert sich das Abo automatisch um ein Jahr. Für Abonnenten ist es ein gutes Gefühl zu wissen, dass täglich etwas Positives zur Bekämpfung des Klimawandels und dem Artensterben geschieht.
